Are Birth Control Methods Biblical?

Christians, for the most part, believe abortion is unbiblical citing the commandment of "Thou shall not murder."
When it comes to birth control, beliefs are all over the spectrum. You have some Christians that believe under no circumstance should birth control be used. Others believe birth control is acceptable to God.
The pope recently came under fire for saying that condoms should never be used. His exact words on his way to Africa was "don't use condoms - even to prevent the spread of Aids."
This has caused many scholars and leaders alarm. It has also brought up this debate once again. The Pope's point of view is that abstinence and fidelity will be more beneficial then condoms, birth control and the sort.
He continued to stress that biblical teaching and living is the only failsafe way to prevent AIDS. It is hard to argue with this logic since biblical living has proven this.
But does that mean that birth control is not biblical?
The Bible is silent on the issue most likely because birth control wasn't used during the time. Most women wanted to get pregnant in hopes of bearing a son to carry on the family line.
Because of this I am not going to quote scriptures at this point to defend or promote the debate. The reason is that I think it stretches the meaning and is left up to individuals' interpretations.
There are several arguments concerning birth control. The main being that God should be in control of the size of a family and using birth control takes this control away.
As my husband would argue, though, God is not limited by birth control and will do whatever he wants. We do know God gives us the ability to make out own decisions. We also know we can make those decisions under Godly counsel.
I say all this to say, I do know that children are a gift from God. I am still unsure how God feels about birth control. It is the list of questions I one day hope to have the opportunity to ask.
I would love to hear your view on the subject. Please leave it in the comment section below.

Top-level comments on this article: (5 total)There are a lot of "unbiblical" things in the bible. King David lusted after a fellow soldier's wife, impregnated her (Bathsheba), and ordered her husband into the thick of battle to be killed. And "God", for his part, killed David's baby by Bathsheba! Talk about yer double standards!II Samuel 12:14 - Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.Gruesome stuff!God is the giver of life and may at His sovereign will take life as well. God declared judgment upon David for the sin he committed against Uriah by setting him up to be killed in battle after he (David) impregnated his (Uriah's) wife. David tried to cover up his sin against Uriah by having him killed in battle. God judged David by taking the life of the child that was conceived in that sin.
No, it is not "unbiblical" but totally Biblical as God is the God of justice. Justice was served in His judgment upon David.
Birth control (primarily condoms) can prevent huge amounts of suffering and death.Condoms have been shown to reduce HIV transmission by around 80% in the right circumstances, and that equates to countless real lives saved and huge amounts of real suffering avoided. Is such a cheap, effective way of preventing suffering and death unbiblical? Is causing suffering and death by attacking or preventing use of condoms biblical?
Abigail you have touched a topic of intensity on both sides. I respond in open form for your readers not towards you. Just what does the Word of God say? What was Gods intentions for life, for man and woman? What is God's word on fornication and adultery? What is marriage's intent and why abstinence? Now men always seem to qualify just God meant or said. I refer to the Potter verses, and paraphrase who are we, anyone, to challenge what God does and why? Do we now judge God? Interesting article that has no answer in this englightened age. An individual choice and certainly the arguments are many on both sides. Now in this age and in my opinion what are the doctrines of men verses God's? Best wishes,

God is older than 18 and Jesus died in his thirties you honestly think the Bible is a kids book? (other than the G rated sections and child versions of some stories...(Noah David and Goliath, maybe Jesus' story [see P.S.])In conclusion, you dont really care about the subject you have false assumptions about but merely an attack on a people minding their own business talking about a subject about their own religious beliefsin your futile attempt to prove yourself correct in your possibly false assumptions by marching in here and disrupting the peace in this small, insignificant corner of the internet by talking to yourself (considering no one responded to you for 118 days ago)please leave your Atheistic militancy to the rational response squad's forums.and stick with your own crowd seriously...
