Tracking Hurricanes From Your Cell Phone

Technology is amazing! I don't think a day goes by that I do not think that to myself. Once again, today is one of those days.

Living in a hurricane prone area, I know how quick a hurricane can turn or move to cause damage on some unsuspecting people. That is why I was excited today to hear that you can now track hurricanes using your cell phone.

Those who have been in a hurricane path know how crazy it can be before a hurricane or even tropical storm makes landfall. You are running crazy from store to store trying to stock up on supplies. You are sitting in long lines at gas stations trying to fill up. You are in long lines at the ATMs trying to pull cash out.

Only to get home and find out it turned? Or worse not knowing at all if it gained speed or anything. Technology comes to the rescue once again.

The things most fascinating before it hits is watching the track of the storm. For some reason we can be glued for hours to it. I guess it is because we know there might not be tv for days after the storm.

Anyhow, there are now endless applications to do just that from your phone.  One such ap is for iPhones and can be accessed at http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/weather-app.html

Another application is from the National Hurricane Center itself and all the information can be found on their Mobile page at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutwap.shtml

Another site is http://www.emicus.com/storm_tracker and is suppose to offer tracking, but is still in the Beta form. I am not a big fan only because it looks like you have to sign up for an account.

This year be prepared as the season really starts to take off and make sure your cell phone is equipped with the necessary download applications. Technology is making some things about a hurricane a little easier to swallow.
