Steven Tyler Quits Aerosmith?

I remember being in high school and having Aerosmith blaring in my room, much to my mom's dislike, as I did my homework.

Admittedly, my adolescence was filled with several girlish crushes and fantasies about marring certain band members. Despite the fact that the band formed in 1970 before I was even born, there is something about Aerosmith that drew girls by the dozen.

Maybe it was the blues based rock or the heavy metal songs, maybe it was Tyler's voice or Joe Perry's guitar riffs. I am not sure what made the band so popular, but they were definitely a band with staying power.

Which is why today was shocking to find out that Joe Perry announced that Steven Tyler has quit the band. Perry confirmed that Tyler is unlikely to perform with band. I will allow you to take a moment of silence.

According to Yahoo news, "Perry's comments follow those of rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford, who last week (November 6) said that Aerosmith are to hold crisis talks about their future after relations with Tyler became strained."

Does this mean an end to one of the oldest bands still touring? Is it the end of "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band?"

Joe Perry says no.

"As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun. "I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer."

I love Aerosmith and I hate the thought of them no longer producing music. Honestly, though, I don't believe going on without Tyler is the answer. I think it is maybe time to retire and go out when you are still remembered fondly. Everyone knows about the Rolling Stones and how they have become the butt of every senior citizen joke. Aerosmith should quit now while the time is good.

My very first concert was an Aerosmith concert in 1975, at the Springfield (Massachusetts) Civic Center. Well, actually, my very first was Seals & Crofts at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center). I'm having trouble appreciating that Aerosmith would even be contemplating staying together, considering their age and the kind of music they play.
